“Lewandowski-Lois is an important painter of the machine age.”

 MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

“Her images are magical. I could look at her K&P Fancy Stitching Machine forever. I get lost in the quiet drama of each machine. She somehow captures the soul of her subject – each painting goes far beyond what the camera can do.”

IRVING PENN

“For Lewandowski-Lois, machines have personalities; she conveys not only the harmonies of form linked inexplicably with function, but implications of the human needs machines fulfill. In its intent, her work is akin to that of Fernand Léger and American Precisionists like Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth.

Its style, however, is manifestly late 20th century: surfaces have a slickness–but unlike Pop art, her paintings are sincere in their praise of factory-produced objects. There is no irony here. By abstracting the mechanical devices she paints from their everyday settings, Lewandowski-Lois reveals the shapes we take for granted as worthy of artistic attention as any landscapes, any bowl of peaches and pears.
